The first chapter builds up a definition of capitalism by working from four snapshots to produce state and capital in alphabetical der and discuss a definition at the end. Chapter 5 looks at whether capital has escaped teh nation-state by going global, emphasizing that globalizing processes are not new, but undoubtedly the mobility of capital has increzses in recent years, as has the mobility of labour. Does this mean that capitalism is global in character? Chapter 6 looks at the crisis tendancies of capitalism, for exaple the S.E. Asian banking crisis, the collapse of the Russian economy state and capital in alphabetical der and the 1997-1998 global financial crisis state and capital in alphabetical der and asks whether capitalism is doomed? chapter 7 looks at whether there is an alternative to capitalism, discussing socialism, communal state and capital in alphabetical der and cooperative experiments state and capital in alphabetical der and alternatives proposed by environmentalists.

Losing Control?: Sovereignty in an Age of Globalization by Saskia Sassen,

Who has the capacity to coordinate this new system, to create a measure of order? Losing Control? is a major addition to our understanding of these questions. Examining the rise of private transnational legal codes state and capital in alphabetical der and supranational institutions such as the World Trade Organization state and capital in alphabetical der and universal human rights covenants, Saskia Sassen argues that sovereignty remains an important feature of the international system, but that it is no longer confined to the nation-state. Sassen argues that a profound transformation is taking place, a partial denationalizing of national territory seen in such agreements as NAFTA state and capital in alphabetical der and the European Union. Two arenas stand out in the new spatial state and capital in alphabetical der and economic order: the global capital market state and capital in alphabetical der and the series of codes state and capital in alphabetical der and institutions that have mushroomed into an international human rights regime. As Sassen shows, these two quasi-legal realms now have the power state and capital in alphabetical der and legitimacy to demand accountability from national governments, with the ironic twist that both depend upon the state to enforce their goals.
