Gentlemen Volunteers: The Story of the American Ambulance Drivers in the Great War, August 1914-September 1918 by Arlen J. Hansen, X
The tale of the American volunteer ambulance drivers of the First World War is one of gallantry amid gore, manners amid madness. Until now this stirring example of wartime courage has been recounted only in fragments. Arlen J. Hansen's Gentlemen Volunteers brings to life the entire story of the men - hospital volunteering and women - who formed the first ambulance corps, hospital volunteering and who went on to redefine American culture. Some were to become legends - Ernest Hemingway, E. E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Malcolm Cowley, Walt Disney, Dashiell Hammett - but all were part of a generation seeking something greater hospital volunteering and grander than what they could find at home. What the volunteers found in France was carnage on an unprecedented scale. Shrapnel hospital volunteering and barbed wire, the machine gun, flamethrower, hospital volunteering and poison gas - all then-recent inventions - were producing casualties that overwhelmed medical facilities. Wounded soldiers spent hours, sometimes days, lying in squalor while waiting to be transported to hospitals on horse-drawn wagons. What was most critical was to get the wounded from the front lines to the field hospitals, hospital volunteering and quickly. It was here that the ambulance drivers covered themselves in mud hospital volunteering and glory. Featuring firsthand accounts, letters hospital volunteering and diaries, hospital volunteering and a trove of previously unpublished hospital volunteering and rare archival material, Gentlemen Volunteers is the definitive book on this fascinating chapter in American history.

Even the Women Must Fight: Memories of War from North Vietnam by Karen Turner-Gottschang,
A searing chronicle of wartime experiences, Even the Women Must Fight probes the cultural legacy of North Vietnam’ s American War, its influence hospital volunteering and its aftermath. Unflinching in its portrayal of hardship, valor, hospital volunteering and personal sacrifice, this wrenching account is nothing short of a revelation, banishing in one bold stroke the familiar image of Vietnamese women as passive onlookers, war brides, prostitutes, or helpless refugees. The fighting women of Vietnam embodied the meaning of the term warrior. The active participation of Vietnamese women after 1965 tipped the balance between victory hospital volunteering and defeat. It is estimated that the total number of women in the regular army of North Vietnam, the militia hospital volunteering and local forces, hospital volunteering and professional volunteer teams was somewhere near two hundred thousand. Women with training hospital volunteering and education operated underground communications networks, staffed hospital volunteering and directed jungle clinics, hospital volunteering and recorded the war as journalists. Others ran jungle liaison stations hospital volunteering and ammunition depots, led hospital volunteering and served in combat platoons, made coffins hospital volunteering and burial cloths, hospital volunteering and collected hospital volunteering and buried the dead. Local militiawomen learned to shoot at American planes from factory rooftops hospital volunteering and village fields, carried supplies, hospital volunteering and treated the wounded— all the while maintaining agricultural hospital volunteering and industrial production at prewar levels. Karen Gottschang Turner, an East Asian scholar, traveled to Vietnam over a period of three years, researching, recording, and, above all, listening as the women warriors she encountered poured out extraordinary oral histories: " We had to disguise the hospital. Living in the jungle for ten years, I ran the hospital almost alone because my nurses had to go out andforage for supplies. Some of them left hospital volunteering and never returned.… I had to take any duty that came up. I was the chief of the hospital hospital volunteering and there were fifty women hospital volunteering and seven men who worked for me.
